How this sign
came to be...
Joan Carey
and Charles Bunyan were planning their summer of 2002 wedding at St.
John's when they met Brenda Earl, our Senior Warden.
Brenda
was recalling how many years ago the start of Isaiah 52:7 ("How beautiful
upon the mountains...") was painted on the wall over the doorway, and
that it had been lost during the several repaintings of the church's
interior.
Joan offered to lead
the project to restore the words. She, her husband-to-be, and her sister Allison began
searching for the perfect piece of wood to create the sign.
During one of
Allison's excursions through New Jersey, she came across an antique
shop operating out of a small
barn. After speaking to the owner Jamie about her mission, they began to search the shop with no success. Jamie, who
was determined to help find the perfect piece of wood for a new sign decided to cross the
street to his home and continue searching. Moments later, he came out from
behind his house with a great big smile and said "this looks like it
should have something written on it!"
The dusty,
ribbon shaped piece of wood was discovered in the "Spring
House", a small stone building directly behind his main farmhouse
which has an artesian spring running through it. The
farmhouse has been in the Jamie's family for six generations and Jamie said
the wood must have been there for at least 100 years.
Then came the clean up, sanding, stencil work and
staining. It was such an exciting project for all who were
involved and it was truly a labor of love. Charles Bunyan and Joan's
brother Walter Carey hung the beautiful sign as a surprise for Brenda
and Father Dearman.
We hope all who
enter the church are inspired by its words. |
